APPLICATION OVERVIEW


HMUN is committed to serve the future leaders of the world. We are looking for student leaders who are ready to tackle some of the world's most plaguing issues and bring about innovative solutions to the conference. Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences, and interests. We welcome and encourage all students to apply for this educational experience.

Be sure to review the information on this page carefully.

Please note that due to the competitive nature of HMUN applications, acceptance to the conference is not guaranteed. We strongly discourage schools from making travel arrangements prior to receiving a confirmation of their acceptance and country assignment.

Applications for HMUN 2019 opened on May 1, 2018. Click here to create an application through our online database.

The Specialized Application opens on June 6, 2018. The deadline for the application is September 26, 2018. Individual delegates or delegates interested in the Specialized Agencies committees should apply to HMUN through the Specialized Agencies Application.

ELIGIBILTIY


In order to be eligible to apply for HMUN 2019, applicants must be 13 years of age or older and enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a high school during the period of January 24 to January 27, 2019. College students are not eligible to apply for HMUN 2019.

We understand that some high schools may culminate before the dates of the conference. You are eligible to apply to HMUN 2019 as long as you will not be matriculated in a college during the period of January 24 to January 27, 2019.

HMUN 2019 is open to students who are:

  • Of any nationality or citizenship
  • Of any gender, race, or ethnicity
  • At least 13 years old
  • Currently enrolled in high school or recent graduates of high school
  • Will not be matriculated in a college during the period of January 24 to January 27, 2019

Once accepted, students must be accompanied by a faculty advisor. Teachers, university students, parents, administrators, and other adults 18 years of age or older are eligible to serve as faculty advisors. Any individual who is eligible to participate at HMUN as a delegate is ineligible to serve as a faculty advisor.

HOW TO APPLY


Students interested in applying to the conference may apply through a school or as an individual delegate.

As such, applicants may apply through three different channels:

  • Large Delegations: Schools with more than 8 students are considered large delegations. Students in large delegations may find themselves in all three committee types - the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council & Regional Bodies, and the Specialized Agencies. Please keep in mind that schools may receive no more than two General Assembly assignments. Additional students under a large delegation may also apply via the Specialized Application.
  • Small Delegations: Schools with 8 or fewer students are considered small delegations. Students in small delegations may find themselves in the Economic and Social Council & Regional Bodies, and the Specialized Agencies. Additional students under a small delegation may also apply via the Specialized Application.
  • Individual Delegates: Indiviudals not applying as a delegation through their school may also apply to HMUN via the Specialized Application. Note that applicants applying as individual delegates must also be accompanied by a faculty advisor.

Specialized Application: HMUN holds a separate application process for several committees, including the NGO Programme, the Press Corps, and all committees in the Specialized Agencies except for Security Council and Historical Security Council. The Specialized Application is available to students applying as indiviudal delegates or as a part of a delegation.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS


Before you apply

  • Review the Conference Terms and Conditions. This describes information on eligibility for our conference. HMUN makes no prior arrangements and agreements with companies or organizations to be the sole provider of HMUN country assignments within a country or district.
  • Learn what countries fit your delegation size with the Country Assignment List for HMUN 2019. This document lists the delegation size for all the countries available in the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council & Regional Bodies for HMUN 2019.
  • Look over our Liability Waiver. Upon acceptance, all attending delegates and faculty advisors are required to submit iability waivers. You may scan the signed forms and email them to info@harvardmun.org. The deadline to submit the liability waivers is Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

Application Instructions

Large Delegation

Students in large delegations are eligible to apply for all three committee types offered at HMUN 2019. Please visit the Country Assignment List for HMUN 2019 in order to review the countries that are available for you to rank. Apart from general information about the delegation, the application will include three long-response questions. Please answer these questions as detailed as possible so that the application committee may better understand the delegation.

Small Delegation

Students in small delegations are eligible to apply for all three committee types offered at HMUN 2019. Please visit the Country Assignment List for HMUN 2019 in order to review the countries that are available for you to rank. Apart from general information about the delegation, the application will include three long-response questions. Please answer these questions as detailed as possible so that the application committee may better understand the delegation.

Individual Delegates

Applicants applying as Individual Delegates may apply to HMUN via the Specialized Application.





After you apply

  • Please do not make arrangements surrounding travel, room and board, and scheduling prior to acceptance.
  • Check in to the application portal MUNbase for application decisions. Application decisions will be released according to the schedule found below.

APPLICATION DECISIONS


Each year, HMUN receives a large number of applications and the selection process is highly competitive. Each application is carefully reviewed by the Secretariat of HMUN and evaluated holistically based on previous model United Nations experience, delegate performance, attendance at past HMUN conferences, and the students' motivation and commitment.

Please note that a submitted application does not necessarily mean acceptance to the conference. HMUN reserves the right to administer acceptances to the conference.

Dates and Timeline

HMUN applications are highly competitive; therefore, we greatly encourage delegations to apply by the two priority application deadlines in order to increase their chances of acceptance. The application decisions will be released according to the schedule found below:

  • Applications received before May 30 (our First Priority Application Deadline): mid to late June
  • Applications received between May 30 and August 29 (our Second Priority Application Deadline): early September
  • Applications received on August 30 or later: reviewed on a rolling basis
  • Specialized Application received before September 26, 2018: mid-late October

Upon Acceptance

Conference Costs:

  • 80 USD per school
  • 80 USD per delegate
  • 65 USD per faculty advisor

Liability Waiver: Required for all delegates and advisors. Please scan the signed forms and email them to info@harvardmun.org by Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

Position Papers: Position papers are due from all students by January 16, 2019, and should be uploaded to the school's MUNbase account by logging in, clicking the "Position Papers" button to the right of the screen, and uploading a separate file for each paper. For each committee, delegates should write and submit as many position papers as there are topics within the committee mandate, regardless of whether the delegation is single-student or double-student. For example, delegations in the Disarmament and International Security Committee should submit one paper, which the two students work together to develop. Each paper should be limited to one single spaced page with 12 pt font and 1-inch margins.

FINANCIAL AID


HMUN believes that no student should be excluded from participating in HMUN 2019 for financial reasons. In order to ensure representation of international perspectives, we seek participants from all corners of the globe. We thus offer substantial need-based financial aid. To determine financial need, we consider all expenses directly related to the conference, including the cost of transportation, lodging, and conference fees. Financial Aid applications are now open. General Information

Our financial aid is strictly need-based. We provide financial assistance for expenses directly related to the conference. In this application, we ask that you please provide relevant financial information about your delegation and school resources. Please provide proof of need in all applicable areas to increase your delegation's chances of receiving financial aid. All information will be treated with utmost confidentiality and will be used only for financial aid purposes. We encourage you to block out any sensitive information in in the documents you submit. These sensitive information may include bank account numbers and Social Security Numbers.

In order to received the allocated financial aid, the financial aid recipient must attend all committee sessions and abide by the conference terms and conditions.

By conference policy, HMUN does not provide financial aid in cash. All financial aid will be given in the form of a check made to the delegate. Financial aid recipient will be be able to pick up a their financial aid award on the Sunday of the conference.

Eligibility

HMUN 2019 is open to students who are:

  • Will not be matriculated in a college during the period of January 24 to January 27, 2019

If you are eligible to attend HMUN, you are most likely eligible for financial aid assistance. Please remember that all financial aid awards are need-based.

COUNTRY ASSIGNMENT POLICIES


Due to the large number of schools interested in HMUN, we will assign no more than two General Assembly delegations or one General Assembly and one Economic and Social Council delegation to any single school. Schools that apply for two Economic and Social Council delegations may be assigned one General Assembly delegation instead. Please note that a delegation in the General Assembly may also include seats on the Security Council and Historical Security Council. Positions on the Regional Bodies committees are also assigned as part of the General Assembly country delegations, although the Regional Bodies committees are part of the Economic and Social Council & Regional Bodies organ.

Country assignments are determined by a variety of factors, including model United Nations experience, number of delegates requested, and country preferences. If you are not assigned one of the countries you requested, it may be to ensure that you receive the number of spots requested.

In some cases, we are not able to assign exactly the number of spots requested. Schools that receive fewer spots than requested but still wishing to bring more delegates are strongly encouraged to apply for our Specialized Application committees, which include most of the Specialized Agencies, the NGO Programme, and the Press Corps. The Specialized Application will become available through your MUNbase account, under the “Delegation” tab.
